Penn Elm's Radiology Department offers modern,
up-to-date and well maintained equipment. Our x-ray technicians are
certified
and have ongoing training,
and patient films are read by licensed radiologists. In addition to
X-ray, radiology does mammograms for
breast cancer screening, and Dexascans for
osteoporosis screening.
Location:
The Radiology Department is located in a
quiet, private area away from the main patient care area, at 815
E. Pennsylvania Ave. (see

MAMMOGRAPHY
A mammogram is an x-ray that produces
an image of the inner breast tissue on film and is used to visualize
normal and abnormal structures within the breasts. It is currently
the most
effective way
to detect early breast cancer. The American Cancer Society currently
recommends that a woman obtain her first
baseline mammogram between the ages of 35 and 40. Between the ages
of 40 and 50 a mammogram should be done every other year. After the
age
of 50, a mammogram should be repeated yearly. Women who are at high
risk for developing breast cancer may need to obtain mammograms earlier
than these recommendations, and at more frequent intervals.
Prior to scheduling your mammogram, you will
need to have your doctor perform a routine breast exam. This
is done so special views can be ordered if an abnormality is noticed,
thus
saving
you an
extra visit.
DEXASCAN
The Dexascan (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry)
is the most exact way to measure bone density to determine if you
are at risk for a bone fracture. The test
takes
about
10
minutes and is done fully clothed. If you have already broken a
bone and your doctor thinks you might have osteoporosis, the test can
confirm
the
diagnosis.
